Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between option 1, 2, and 3 payment planss?
Flex plans are "pay as you go punch cards" and can be used for either private or group lessons (same price) or mix and match to customize a regime that fits your lifestyle and schedule. You pay the most per lesson when you pay for fencing this way but you gain the most flexibility with the least amount of risk. Ideal for new fencers trying us out or those that can only come once a week for example.
Monthly + membership is a hybrid model taking the best of both flexible and fixed plans. Once you pay your upfront membership fee you have the flexibility to pay month to month while getting the benefits of the fixed unlimited plan. Ideal for families that budget on a month to month basis.
Fixed plans are discounted bundled packages for committed fencers that want to save money. This is the best value plan we offer as it includes fee annual membership (-$600) plus unlimited lessons, open fencing and four private lessons per month. A bargain!
Group vs private lesson which is better?
Having a balance of both private and group lessons is recommended but if you are short on time due to logistics we recommend you focus on private lessons combined with open bouting and tournaments to reach your goals.
Group lessons are 1.5 hours in duration. Group lessons are progressive, well-rounded, sessions consisting of conditioning, stretching, footwork, technical blade work, and paired tournament fencing application using full electrical scoring.
Private lessons are necessary to be successful in today's competitive environment. The critical nuances of the distance and timing cannot be taught in a group class setting. Each private lesson is 40 minutes in total consisting of 10 min. independent warm-up, 20 minutes technical 1:1 instruction, and 10 min. of independent reinforcement. Appointments are reserved online a la carte or can be booked by us as a "standing reservations" for fixed plans.
Do you prorate bundled deals?
Yes, when you start mid-month we'll manually refund you back the difference on whatever package you purchase. Your initial purchase will be for the full value of the package and then we manually adjust after calculations. Usually within one day of the date of sale.
It should be noted that we do not prorate bundled deals so please do not ask us if you can pay the 12-month rate for fewer months.
Are there any restrictions or "fine print?"
The "fine print":
USFA membership is required to participate in any fencing activities. Parents are responsible for joining the USFA and paying the minimum dues ($10 as of July 2019). This is an insurance mandate that must be done prior to starting lessons.
Results Fitness Gym is an optional added value program and is charged separatly by them. This is a change from last year to streamline the administrative work of transferring payments to them from WAY.
Flex plans expire in two months from time of purchase. Use it or lose it.
Equipment is provided for all plans and includes USFA regulation uniform (whites) and mask and electrical scoring lame. Wire and blade are included for the first 3-months.
You have the option to pay for a fixed plan in two installments. There is a 5% premium per payment due at signing.
Discounts only apply to lessons found in payment option 2 or 3. Membership is never discounted.
Refund cancelation policy?
Fixed plans are prorated for moving more than 35 miles from 06877 or long term injury supported by a doctors note. No refunds to parents that allow their children to quit the program prematurely.
Cancelation of private lessons must be done online or in writing (text or email) 24-hours prior to start. No exceptions!
What is "open tourney?"
Open bouting sessions are scheduled blocks of time designed to for students to practice and apply their craft using tournament formats (pools, direct elimination or relay). Open bouting brings all students together, by weapon form, of different age classifications, to fence and be social. Coaches have an expectation that their competitive students are attending open fencing as part of their training regime. This is not "play time."
To participate in open fencing students must first learn how to be autonomous, understand the rules of the strip, uniform requirements and to behave appropriately in accordingly at all times.
What are the training expectations so I can calculate costs?
That all depends on the age of the student, skill, and goals. We designed our pricing to give you the OPTION to "tiptoe" in (one day a week for example) or go all in and train multiple days.
As a general rule and to keep pace with other students willing to make fencing their sport, not just an activity, we recommend training 4 to 10 two days a week plus one private lesson and more when competing in the USFA.
What if I want to add more private lessons to my bundled deal?
You can purchase additional private lessons at a discounted rate from flex plans. 10 = $400 ($40 per private lesson)
How do I book a private lesson or enroll in a class?
We invite you to book online or call us and let us help you get started. Fencing is hard enough booking a lesson need not be. https://wayofthesword.org/appointments
